Applications of PVC Plastic and Notes When Using

PVC plastic is an important material in the production of plastic products in life. Below, TAELIM will introduce this type of plastic and its applications for you to understand clearly.

Brief introduction to PVC plastic

PVC plastic, full name Polyvinyl Chloride, is synthesized through the polymerization reaction of vinyl chloride (CH₂=CHCl). This type of plastic is usually white or amber in color and is solid under normal conditions.

Pure PVC is not harmful to human health, however, it will not have good bearing capacity. In order to improve toughness and processability, during the production process, people often add from 5% to 15% additives such as MBS, ABS, CPE, EVA, phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA).

Detailed PVC plastic classification

To optimize the application of PVC plastic in practice, PVC plastic is classified based on its properties and appearance. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and is widely used in the fields of manufacturing and construction. Below are the main classifications of this type of plastic for you to understand:

  • Rigid PVC (uPVC): This type of plastic contains no or very little plasticizer, usually below 5%. The main ingredients include PVC powder, lubricants, heat stabilizers and some other additives. This mixture is mixed and heated at temperatures from 160°C to 180°C in extruders and calenders.
  • Flexible PVC: This type of PVC contains plasticizer content above 5%, which increases flexibility and meets manufacturer requirements.

Advantages and disadvantages of PVC

Each type of industrial plastic has its own advantages and disadvantages, and PVC plastic is no exception. Based on the benefits and limitations of PVC Plastic, users can choose the appropriate application to optimize the efficiency of use in practice.

Advantages of PVC plastic

Nowadays, this type of plastic is widely used in the manufacturing industry and we often encounter these products in our daily lives. Accordingly, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) plastic stands out with many notable advantages:

  • Heat and fire resistance: PVC plastic has good heat and fire resistance, making it an ideal choice for the production of interior and decorative products where high safety is required.
  • High durability: Products made from PVC plastic are often mixed with additives to increase durability and impact resistance, ensuring the product can withstand external impacts.
  • Low Cost: PVC plastic is affordable, helping to save costs in production and fit the budget of many projects.
  • Chemical Resistance: PVC has excellent chemical resistance, superior to many other plastics, making it suitable for applications requiring corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.

Disadvantages of PVC plastic

Besides the outstanding advantages mentioned above, this material still has some important disadvantages to note:

  • Flammability and toxic fumes: Although PVC plastic has good heat resistance, when the temperature exceeds 120°C, it easily catches fire and produces toxic fumes with an unpleasant odor. Inhaling fumes from PVC can cause poisoning if exposed to large amounts.
  • Effects of low temperature: When exposed to low temperature environments, the molecular structure of PVC plastic can lose its bonds, reducing the durability and usability of the product.
  • Poor corrosion resistance: PVC is not as resistant to corrosion as some other plastics, which can reduce product life and performance in harsh environments.

Applications of PVC plastic in life

Polyvinyl Chloride plays an important role in many products that serve people's daily needs. Below are some of the main applications of PVC plastic in life for you to understand.

PVC plastic film

PVC plastic films are manufactured through calendering or blowing methods on specialized machinery. Depending on the proportion of plasticizer added, PVC plastic films can be classified into three main types: soft, semi-rigid and rigid. When the plasticizer content is lower than 5 phr (parts of plasticizer per 100 parts of PVC), the film will be rigid. Contents from 5 to 15 phr produce semi-rigid films, while contents above 15 phr will produce flexible films.

Common plasticizers used in the production of PVC films include DOP, DINP, TXIV, and Hexamoll DINCH. PVC films are widely used in many consumer products such as raincoats, packaging, salt field covers, mineral water bottle labels, and photo albums.

Plastic PVC is an electric cable.

PVC electrical cables are popular for their superior performance and durability. These cables are often classified according to the operating temperature, including 70°C, 90°C and 105°C. 70°C cables are mainly used in domestic electrical systems. Meanwhile, cables with the ability to withstand temperatures of 90°C and 105°C are often used in harsher environments such as cars, ships, and transformer stations.

PVC pipe

PVC pipes are divided into two main types: rigid plastic pipes (uPVC) and flexible plastic pipes. PVC pipes have a wide range of applications, including water supply systems, sewage pipes in high-rise buildings, irrigation pipes for farms, as well as petroleum pipes, etc.

uPVC Profile for doors, partitions, fences

uPVC Profile, also known as Profile, is an ideal choice for making doors, partitions, and fences thanks to its excellent sound and heat insulation. With the ability to withstand temperatures up to 1000°C and equipped with a reinforced steel core, uPVC Profile provides superior durability and strength to door structures. Products commonly made from uPVC include high-grade steel-core plastic doors, windows, large doors, PVC partitions, and plastic fences used to surround villas and townhouses.

Applications in construction

PVC plastic panels not only have a protective function but are also decorated with many eye-catching patterns such as marble, wood grain or mirror gloss, bringing a luxurious beauty to the living space. PVC plastic panels stand out with high durability and excellent moisture resistance, and are much easier to clean and wipe than other materials. In addition to being used in home interior decoration, they are also applied in boat interiors, flat ceilings, and many other fields.
